چکیده

New approaches to multidisciplinary design optimization have been developed and demonstrated in a NASA Langley funded project to look at a particularly challenging aeronautics problem – High Speed Civil Transport Aeroelastic Wing Design. In particular, the problem is how to incorporate key multidisciplinary information and knowledge as it becomes available. This problem results from such information not being available early in the design process due to dependence on higher fidelity models, databases and analysis tools. A Robust Design Synthesis methodology involving the application of response surface equations was developed and successfully applied in the solution of this problem. The approach also involved the incorporation of stochastic models for the design parameters and the development of tools for their propagation through the approximations generated for the design space under consideration. The research addresses several key wing design domains including aerodynamics, structural analysis and controls as necessary to address the wing aeroelasticity and transonic flutter problems, including the potential application to active flexible wing technologies.

Managing Mdo Software Development Projects

Over the past decade, the NASA Langley Research Center developed a series of "grand challenge" applications demonstrating the use of parallel and distributed computation and multidisciplinary design optimization. All but the last of these applications were focused on the high-speed civil transport vehicle; the final application focused on reusable launch vehicles. Teams of discipline experts de...

A Coarse Grained Variable-Complexity Approach to MDO for HSCT Design

A parallel variable-complexity modeling approach, permitting the eecient use of emerging parallel computing in multidisciplinary optimization (MDO) technology, is presented for the particular instance of High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) design. Simple analyses are used to limit the approximation domain in the design space. Points are selected within the approximation domain by a genetic algori...

Progress Toward Using Sensitivity Derivatives in aHigh - Fidelity

Several government/commercial oo-the-shelf modular software packages have been combined to perform static aeroelastic analysis and aerodynamic optimization of a generic high-speed civil transport, with the eventual goal of performing high-delity multidisciplinary optimization (MDO). Results obtained for the aeroelastic analysis and aerodynamic optimization cases are consistent with expectations...

A Fully Distribute Parallel Global Search Algorithm

The n-dimensional direct search algorithm DIRECT of Jones, Perttunen, and Stuckman has attracted recent attention from the multidisciplinary design optimization community. Since DIRECT only requires function values (or ranking) and balances global exploration with local refinement better than n-dimensional bisection, it is well suited to the noisy function values typical of realistic simulation...
